SFCM's Voice Department is committed to cross-training the next generation of classical singers. 

Building on a strong foundation of private lessons, weekly one-on-one coachings, studio classes, and professional development courses, SFCM's Voice program expanded in 2024, embracing multi-genre performance opportunities alongside its existing, lauded Opera and Musical Theatre Program. Students have access to a highly diverse ensemble program, one that continuously generates the unique performance opportunities that now define the modern musical economy. 

SFCM provides a unique educational experience for the 21st-century singing artist. During their first year at SFCM, singers take four Vocal Craft Module Classes designed to survey different genres within the world of vocal arts: Acting and Art Song, Opera, Musical Theater, and Contemporary Vocals. This gives the SFCM singer the rare opportunity to engage in cross-genre exploration from the beginning of their time here.

SFCM stages three operas and two musical theatre productions with a full orchestra or chamber ensemble each academic year with all performances in SFCM's 300+ capacity Caroline H. Hume Concert Hall augmented by evolving, immersive projection technology. Along with multiple studio and departmental recitals, the Conservatory also puts on an undergraduate-only opera as part of its annual Winter Term.

SFCM singers—like all Conservatory students—benefit from SFCM's Alliance with arts management companies Askonas Holt and Opus 3 Artists, with industry luminaries from their rosters like Joyce DiDonato, Meow Meow, Patricia Racette, and Craig Terry visiting for residences, masterclasses, and performances. SFCM also enjoys a robust, collaborative relationship with the San Francisco Opera and the San Francisco Opera Center (the Merola and Adler Fellowship Programs) with several of our faculty members performing and teaching at both institutions.  As with SFCM's relationship with the San Francisco Symphony, SFCM singers have uncommon access to San Francisco Opera's dress rehearsals as well as free or discounted tickets to performances frequently available through the Conservatory.
