At SFCM we ground things in classical vocal technique. With the non-technical side, the artistry, we continue to develop that from whichever genre it has grown."—Richard Cox, Executive Chair and Professor of Voice
SFCM's Voice Department is committed to cross-training the next generation of classical singers.
Building on a strong foundation of private lessons, weekly one-on-one coachings, studio classes, and professional development courses, SFCM's Voice program expanded in 2024, embracing multi-genre performance opportunities alongside its existing, lauded Opera and Musical Theatre Program. Students have access to a highly diverse ensemble program, one that continuously generates the unique performance opportunities that now define the modern musical economy.
SFCM provides a unique educational experience for the 21st-century singing artist. During their first year at SFCM, singers take four Vocal Craft Module Classes designed to survey different genres within the world of vocal arts: Acting and Art Song, Opera, Musical Theater, and Contemporary Vocals. This gives the SFCM singer the rare opportunity to engage in cross-genre exploration from the beginning of their time here.
SFCM stages three operas and two musical theatre productions with a full orchestra or chamber ensemble each academic year with all performances in SFCM's 300+ capacity Caroline H. Hume Concert Hall augmented by evolving, immersive projection technology. Along with multiple studio and departmental recitals, the Conservatory also puts on an undergraduate-only opera as part of its annual Winter Term.
Joyce DiDonato performs with SFCM students in the Caroline H. Hume Concert Hall.
SFCM singers—like all Conservatory students—benefit from SFCM's Alliance with arts management companies Askonas Holt and Opus 3 Artists, with industry luminaries from their rosters like Joyce DiDonato, Meow Meow, Patricia Racette, and Craig Terry visiting for residences, masterclasses, and performances. SFCM also enjoys a robust, collaborative relationship with the San Francisco Opera and the San Francisco Opera Center (the Merola and Adler Fellowship Programs) with several of our faculty members performing and teaching at both institutions. As with SFCM's relationship with the San Francisco Symphony, SFCM singers have uncommon access to San Francisco Opera's dress rehearsals as well as free or discounted tickets to performances frequently available through the Conservatory.

Digital Opera Hall
The new immersive Caroline H. Hume digital opera hall amplifies student performance opportunities. Upgrades include mobile hall trusses, lighting infrastructure changes, and mounted projectors that display vast, colorful, and detailed images. These upgrades heighten the educational and performance experience across every music genre at the Conservatory.

SFCM alumna Esther Tonea performs at an on-campus workshop for composer Jake Heggie's new opera, set to premiere at the Houston Grand Opera.
Joyce DiDonato (represented by SFCM alliance member Askonas Holt) sings at SFCM's commencement following a week of activities at the Conservatory, including a masterclass for students.
Opera and Musical Theatre Department Chair and SFCM two-time alumna Heather Mathews guides students to finding the true essence of their characters while delving into music and text.
Each year, SFCM produces four fully-staged opera and musical theatre productions with a full or chamber orchestra. Recent operas included La Clemenza di Tito, Hansel and Gretel, Le nozze di Figaro, Die Fledermaus, and The Enchanted Pig.
SFCM voice students perform in rehearsals and opera performances throughout the year, including in studio recitals.
Students learn alongside professional vocalists in an audition workshop for singers.
Opus 3-represented operatic soprano Patricia Racette directed SFCM's production of The Consul, which was conducted by Donato Cabrera.
The celebrated singer will join the voice faculty in Fall 2024 with a select studio of students.

Industry Alliances to Support Students and Artists
In recent years, SFCM acquired two leading artist management companies and an iconic record label to reimagine how elements of the music industry can better integrate to advance the human experience through music. For students, that means more opportunities to interact with touring artists and industry experts–including professional development workshops, side-by-side performances, and enhanced masterclasses.
