Biography

Samuel C. Nedel is a composer, performer, producer, and teacher, equally devoted to music traditions and the innovations that have transformed them over centuries. His many years of experience in orchestral music, opera, choral music, disco, cabaret, bluegrass, and electronic music have given him a distinct perspective from which he draws inspiration.

His career began in his home state of Ohio, as a double bassist for several regional theater companies and a chorus member of both the Cleveland Opera and Cleveland Orchestra. The bulk of his performance work, however, took place in New York City. Samuel was a member of The Chelsea Symphony, a composer and tenor for Chromatic Voice Exchange, and a regular chorister at St. Bart’s Episcopal Church on Park Avenue. He played bass for cabaret artist Micheline Van Houtem, was a pit musician for Blue Hill Troupe and Amore Opera, and performed as a member of the fictitious New York Symphony in the Golden Globe-winning Mozart in the Jungle.

During his years in New York, Samuel’s interest in composition developed into a passion, one that would come to define the next chapter of his career and lead him to study it formally. Samuel holds a BM in Composition and a PSC in Technology and Applied Composition (TAC) from SFCM, and a Diploma with distinction in music theory from the European American Music Alliance’s Summer Institute in Paris. He studied with Lowell Liebermann, David Garner, and Sonia Mokhtari. In 2023 Samuel joined SFCM’s TAC department as an adjunct professor. He teaches Fundamentals of Applied Composition, Portfolio Review, and applied lessons.
