RJAM Masterclass with Marcos Varela

This event is open to the public and no tickets are required for attendance.
Guest Artists visit SFCM to share their expertise with student musicians. Take a peek 'behind' the curtain and experience the authentic, welcoming and empowering learning environment of the next generation of Jazz artists at the Roots, Jazz and American Music (RJAM) Program at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Program
The RJAM Convocation serves as a community gathering place for all RJAM students regardless of their ensemble placements or year. The entire RJAM community comes together in this class in a traditional Jam Session setting with a modern Masterclass character in order to play and learn with each other and from each other.
The Executive Director and Assistant Director oversee, lead and grade this class, with visiting faculty and/or non-SFCM-faculty artists co-teaching the class on a case-by-case basis and providing feedback on students’ performances, sit in with them, demonstrate and/or answer questions. RJAM students will also share respectful, productive and encouraging feedback with their colleagues.

About SFCM’s Roots, Jazz, and American Music Department
Roots, Jazz, and American Music is a first-of-its-kind program that links a world-class music conservatory to an award-winning jazz concert venue at SFJAZZ. A program for undergraduate and postgraduate students that takes a holistic view of jazz from its inception to its current status, RJAM prepares the next generation of great jazz artists by engaging students in an innovative model of apprenticeship with all-star faculty, including members of the SFJAZZ Collective. Students in the RJAM program have the opportunity to perform in multiple venues in the Bay Area, and to collaborate and learn from some of the top jazz artists on the concert circuit today.
