Playing for Dancers
Winter Term is a two week period SFCM sets aside for students to immerse themselves in subjects beyond the standard curriculum. Students can explore a project they've never quite had the time for, get a head start in their career by developing a business or technical skill, finding fun ways to explore the world around us through music, or see what happens when they perform in a way they haven't before!
Performances during winter term are an opportunity for students to showcase what they have worked on during their winter term project.
Come Dancing!
Swing & sway to live music at the SFCM Winter Term concert and social dance party! Take a seat and tap a toe, or put on your dancing shoes and take to the floor to enjoy some classic tunes from mid-20th Century dance halls.
5:30 PM -- Drop-in Social Dance Lesson
Basic steps in two social dances, led by longtime Bay Area ballroom dance teacher and SFCM Professor of Technology and Applied Composition, Shawne Workman.
No experience needed! No partner required!
Pro tip for new dancers: Wear comfortable shoes that let you turn without slipping or leaving marks (leather sole, ballet slippers, jazz shoes, sneakers with light-color soles — all good).
6:00-7:00 PM -- Concert and Dance Party
Familiar melodies and toe-tapping rhythms from SFCM student musicians under the leadership of SFCM's Roots, Jazz, and American Music (RJAM) Executive Director Jason Hainsworth.

About SFCM’s Roots, Jazz, and American Music Department
Roots, Jazz, and American Music is a first-of-its-kind program that links a world-class music conservatory to an award-winning jazz concert venue at SFJAZZ. A program for undergraduate and postgraduate students that takes a holistic view of jazz from its inception to its current status, RJAM prepares the next generation of great jazz artists by engaging students in an innovative model of apprenticeship with all-star faculty, including members of the SFJAZZ Collective. Students in the RJAM program have the opportunity to perform in multiple venues in the Bay Area, and to collaborate and learn from some of the top jazz artists on the concert circuit today.
