What is your hometown?

San Francisco

What is your favorite recording? Why?

Schubert Sonatas performed by Bernhard Abramowitsch.  This is unique playing that captures the essence of Schubert. 

What are you passionate about outside of music?

My children, cooking, and all things Italian. 

Who were your major teachers?

Bernhard Abramowitsch, Peggy Salkind

What is a favorite quote that you repeatedly tell students?

Sing the music.

What was the defining moment when you decided to pursue music as a career?

There was never any question in my mind.  I just knew. 

If you weren't a musician or teacher, what do you think you would be doing now?

Foreign language interpreter.

If you could play only three composers for the rest of your life, who would they be?

Bach, Mozart and Schubert

From a music history perspective, what year and city are most important to you, and why?

Leipzig during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.  It was home for Bach, Mendelssohn and Schumann. 

What is your unrealized project?

Learn all the Schubert Sonatas.

Biography

Annamarie McCarthy has presented recitals at CAMI Hall (Columbia Artist Management Hall) in New York City, the Bracebridge Concerts at Yosemite National Park, at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Stanford University, UC San Francisco and UC Santa Cruz. She has recorded for Composers Recording Society and been presented in live performance on KQED and KALW as a member of the Annamarie and John McCarthy piano duo

Her students have received numerous awards , been accepted into leading universities and music schools, and hold academic positions in music departments at the University Level.  They are members of leading professional ensembles, including the Argento Chamber Ensemble and San Francisco Opera.
