San Francisco Conservatory of Music Announces New Campaign Challenge by Members of the Board of Trustees: Trustee Giving Now Exceeds $20 Million
The San Francisco Conservatory of Music has received a $3.5 million challenge for its relocation to Civic Center from three long-time members of the Conservatory Board of Trustees: William K. Bowes, Vice Chair, Jean Deleage, Treasurer, and Michael R.V. Whitman, Vice Chair. The combined challenge is a one for one match for new gifts and pledges to the campaign. This challenge follows previous contributions to the campaign by these members of the Board. All gifts must be matched by June 30, 2005. The campaign has $17.7 million left to raise of a $65 million campaign goal.
This new challenge represents the third for the campaign. The project was launched in 2000 with an anonymous $5 million challenge by a Conservatory Board member followed in 2002 by a $9 million challenge issued from three leading San Francisco philanthropists and long-time Conservatory supporters: the late Phyllis Wattis, the Bernard Osher Foundation, and Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation. The Conservatory completed this challenge in 2003.
Colin Murdoch, President of the Conservatory comments, Our board members are dedicated to building a future for music. This challenge again reflects the Board's commitment to the Conservatory's mission and future. Mr. Bowes adds, As I see the new Conservatory at Civic Center taking shape - from the recent pouring of the concrete foundation and the steel infrastructure rising from this foundation - I also imagine the satisfaction of watching students perform and grow as musicians in their new home; it is very rewarding to be part of this. In addition, Mr. Deleage says, We have all shared in the goal of seeing the Conservatory move into a state-of-the art building in the heart of Civic Center, and we are watching these plans come to life at the construction site. Mr. Whitman comments, For anyone who cares about the chamber or recital repertoire in the city of San Francisco, this is the pure play. Gifts to the project by members of the Conservatory's Board of Trustees represent over $20 million of the $47.3 million raised thus far.
50 Oak Street Construction Update:
- Four feet of stabilizing concrete poured in mid November 2004
- Structural steel infrastructure began mid November 2004
- The project remains on budget at $80 million and on time with the first class scheduled for Fall 2006
About the San Francisco Conservatory of Music
The San Francisco Conservatory is one of the leading music schools in the world. Each year, the Conservatory serves more than 1,300 students through its Collegiate, Preparatory, and Adult Extension Divisions and its summer programs. Its students and faculty also present more than 1,600 public performances - most of them free - to more than 24,000 Bay Area residents and visitors annually. In September 2003, the Conservatory began construction on its new $80 million teaching, performance, rehearsal and practice facility in San Francisco's Civic Center that will essentially double the Conservatory's size from its current 37,000-square-foot facility in the Sunset District. Scheduled to open in 2006, the new San Francisco Conservatory of Music at Civic Center provides dramatic improvements in classroom, studio and practice spaces as well as several new venues for public performances, including a 450-seat state-of-the-art Concert Hall.
