San Francisco Conservatory of Music Appoints World-Renowned Cellist
Sadao Harada to FacultySAN FRANCISCO, CA August 6, 2003 The San Francisco Conservatory of Music has appointed internationally renowned musician Sadao Harada to the cello faculty beginning in the fall of 2003. "We are thrilled to welcome Sadao to the Conservatory," says President Colin Murdoch. "His extraordinary musical talent and outstanding teaching ability will provide both the Conservatory and the Bay Area music community a new and dynamic force."
Mr. Harada is a graduate of the Toho School of Music in Japan and The Juilliard School. While at Juilliard, he founded the celebrated Tokyo String Quartet and remained its cellist until June 1999. He also held the posts of principal cellist of both the Aspen Chamber Orchestra and the Nashville Symphony. Mr. Harada has won numerous competitions, including first prize at the Cello Department of the 33rd NHK-Mainichi Music Competition (recently known as "the Music Competition of Japan"), as well as the prestigious Mainichi Art Awards for chamber music. He became the youngest principal cellist of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra prior to coming to the United States in 1967. Mr. Harada continues to maintain a busy international career as an acclaimed soloist and chamber musician.
Founded in 1917, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music offers music programs to graduate and undergraduate students, preparatory and adult extension classes and community enrichment programs. The Conservatory presents over 360 public performances a year, reflecting the world-class talent of students, faculty, alumni and visiting artists. The Conservatory will be relocating to the expanded and refurbished Oak Street facilities in 2006, providing students, faculty and the Bay Area community with access to premiere musical resources in the heart of downtown.
