San Francisco Conservatory Of Music Classical Guitar Alumni And Students Take Center Stage At Carnegie Hall On March 6
SFCM Classical Guitar Department Produces International Guitar Concert
SAN FRANCISCO, March 1, 2005: Conservatory guitar students and recent alumni will take the stage in New York at Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall on Sunday, March 6th, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. for a special concert showcasing the talent of students past and present.
The concert is sponsored by John Stover, an alumnus of the Conservatory who graduated with a Master's degree in classical guitar 25 years ago. This performance will mark the 25th anniversary of Stover's own debut concert at Carnegie Hall while he was still a student at the Conservatory.
The program includes:
Piedad by Terry Riley, written for his son Gyan on his 18th birthday. Gyan Riley (B.M. '99/M.M. '01) will also perform his own Sonata Quasifantokastica. Brazilian Alieksey Vianna (B.M. '02), winner of more than a dozen guitar competitions, will perform a Brazilian program including the New York premiere of Fantasia Carioca by Sergio Assad. A seldom-heard Sonata by the Russian composer Edison Denisov, the only solo work that composer offered for guitar, will be played by Michael Bautista (M.M. '04).
Jonathan Mendle (B.M. '07) will open the concert with his transcription for 7-string guitar of the famous Bach Toccata and Fugue. Santiago Gutierrez (B.M. '03/M.M. '05), from Mexico, will team up with recent alumni Adam Roszkiewicz (B.M. '01/M.M. '03) in the Bogdanović arrangements of a set of Scriabin Preludes, as well as Gutierrez' own Danza Bruja. Former Manuel Barrueco student Patrick O'Connell (M.M. '06) will present the traditional Spanish fare with the Sonata by Joaquin Turina. John Stover (M.M. '80), will appear in Manha de Carnaval by Luis Bonfa.

About the Classical Guitar Program:
The SFCM Guitar program is chaired by renowned classical guitarist David Tanenbaum. The program consists of four faculty members, and around 25 students are enrolled at one time. The SFCM Guitar Ensemble performs regularly throughout Northern California, in Master Classes with distinguished visiting artists, recitals and chamber music.
