BAY AREA SUMMER MUSIC PROGRAM OPENS AUDITIONS TO YOUNG
MUSICIANS
Summer Music West Introduces New Gilbert and Sullivan
ProgramSAN FRANCISCO, CA February 11, 2003 Summer Music West (SMW), the San Francisco Conservatory
of Music's annual summer music program for young musicians is announcing
auditions for the upcoming 2003 summer program. Now in its 19
th
year, SMW continues to offer students the best of a Conservatory environment:
experienced faculty, performance opportunities, small classes, individual
attention and the chance to attend Conservatory concerts and master classes
by world-class musicians.
John McCarthy, director of SMW comments, "This year we
are thrilled to work with The Lamplighters, the renowned 50 year
old musical theater institution in the Bay Area, in offering Gilbert
and Sullivan Scenes, a program that explores singing, acting and stage
movement." The program culminates in a fully staged performance of scenes
from this repertoire that showcases the student’s talents and learning.
SMW programs offer budding musicians the special opportunity
to collaborate with other talented musicians and faculty to create and
perform their own works. Alexis Alrich, composition faculty member says,
"It is amazing to watch these young students create their own music compositions,
they are completely excited about the music – their very own original works
– and this excitement is shared by fellow students who actually get to
perform and premiere these works in a concert."
Students ages 4-20 explore excellence in music through
programs including Early Childhood Music, Musicianship, Composition Intensive,
String and Piano Academy, Gilbert and Sullivan Scenes and Chamber Music.
Applications are now being accepted and the first session begins June
16. Classes are held at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, 1201
Ortega Street at 19th Avenue. Scholarship assistance is available.
