Overview and Welcome from the Director
Located in a stunning facility in the heart of the city, the Adult Extension Division of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music offers a variety of musical opportunities designed to suit all levels of interest and aspiration. Private lessons with our professional faculty are available for those who wish to learn a new instrument, dust off an old one, or hone their vocal technique. if you want to keep up with a young musician in your family whose musical knowledge is quickly surpassing your own, we have adult classes in Dalcroze Eurhythmics, Class Piano and Music Appreciation. And we continue to present our popular Performance Workshop for Singers as well as an array of other courses.
Notable courses this spring include Viva Verdi, a four-week exploration of the beauty of Italian opera taught by San Francisco Opera Director of Music Administration Kip Cranna in anticipation of Giuseppe Verdi's 200th birthday. Following a highly successful debut last semester, we once again offer our Adult Extension Chamber Music class. Perfectly tailored for students with some instrumental proficiency and a desire to play the great chamber works, the class includes weekly coachings and access to premier Conservatory chamber music events. The Conservatory Adult Extension Division will enrich your esperience of music on and off the stage!
Joan Gordon, Director of Preparatory and Adult Extension Divisions
The Conservatory's Adult Extension Division offers varied and stimulating programs for adults. Whether you're a professional musician in need of specialized instruction or an opera lover seeking greater understanding of the art form, Adult Extension programs provide superior music enrichment and education.
Some of the Bay Area's most innovative musicians and scholars teach our general interest classes. These courses do not require any previous musical experience or knowledge, and vary from semester to semester. If you are looking for specific music instruction, we offer applied music courses each semester at the beginning and intermediate levels.
Our outstanding private lesson faculty provides intense and personalized instruction on all orchestral instruments, piano, organ, harpsichord, harp, guitar, voice and composition. While taking private lessons at the Conservatory you will have the opportunity to perform in the Sol Joseph Recital Hall and the larger, 450-seat Concert Hall.
Adult Extension students have participated in the Gina Bachaur and Van Cliburn International Competitions for Outstanding Amateurs, and have performed as concerto soloists with local orchestras.
