SFCM is committed to providing an extraordinary education that transforms our students artistically, intellectually, professionally and individually. By studying music at the highest level, they learn to understand the nature of excellence, to seek achievement in every endeavor and to pursue their dreams with vigor and determination.

This year's season of nearly 500 performances and events opens a window on this transformation. In SFCM's exquisite concert halls, you may hear a soloist shine in an orchestral concert, a diva take flight in a fully-staged opera production, a budding composer bask in his first full-concert premiere, or an alumni ensemble forge a new path in chamber music. In all cases, you'll experience great music and witness music's power to change individuals.

An entire concert series showcases our faculty, many of whom perform with the Bay Area's major orchestras, acclaimed early music ensembles and national opera companies. Great artistry and great teaching also meet in our Chamber Music and Master Class series, which welcome world-renowned guest artists including the Grammy Award-winning Pacifica Quartet, mezzo-soprano Susan Graham, violinist Jennifer Koh and guitarist David Russell. Special highlights include a live taping on February 14 of NPR's From the Top, featuring distinguished alumni with young talent from the Pre-College Division, and the Conservatory Gala on March 23, honoring acclaimed soprano Elza van den Heever '04 and collaborative pianist Warren Jones '77.

Several groundbreaking programs this year examine music's resonance beyond the concert hall. In November, the Rubin Institute for Music Criticism features the nation's most esteemed music journalists, students from SFCM and four top universities, and performances by the San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Opera, Cal Performances and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. SFCM also presents conferences on video game and film music and artist-led ensembles working at the frontiers of new music.

Here at the cultural heart of the world's most innovative city, on any evening of the year, you can be part of an inspiring journey of artistic and personal discovery. We invite you to browse the extraordinary range of events in our performance calendar, most of which are free of charge, and plan your visit.
