Artistic Operations

Description:

The Student Artist Liaison will provide administrative and operational support to the Associate Vice President of Artistic Operations, the Assistant Director of Artistic Operations, and the entire Artistic Operations department for all guest artist activities and residencies. Student Artist Liaisons will have the opportunity to work closely with Opus 3 Artists, Askonas Holt, and PENTATONE artists and management.

Job Duties:

  • Assist the Assistant Director of Artistic Operations with advancing all guest artist activities and residencies, such as booking lodging and transportation
  • Prepare detailed itineraries and welcome packets for guest artists
  • Be a point of contact for guest artists, greeting them upon arrival, running errands, and providing general support during their stay
  • Assist in the smooth flow of relevant information to other departments related to artist activities and residencies
  • Maintain a positive and professional demeanor at all times
  • Attend evening and weekend events in-person as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Description:

Box Office staff are required to be hired as Production Staff and complete General Training. This team is an administrative support to the Concert Operations Team and SFCM as a whole. During your box office shift you may be assigned general production tasks, and you may also perform box office, front or house or back of house duties during concerts in addition to the daily and weekly administrative tasks described below. The students in this position will be responsible for multiple facets of concert operations and SFCM public facing needs including:

Reception

  • Acting as the first point of contact by answering phone calls and emails from SFCM patrons and the general public
  • Receiving incoming mail/packages and notifying the appropriate recipients

Box Office & Calendar Management

  • Helping Patrons with reserving their tickets through the SFCM performance calendar and the new ticketing system, Spektrix, to navigate selling tickets on the phone & online.
  • Selling merchandise using Square software.
  • Learning a basic knowledge of the EMS scheduling system to run weekly and daily room cards at 50 Oak and update changes and new events in the Click-Up project management system.

Programs

  • Email students to collect program and dress rehearsal information.
  • Creating drafts of programs in Adobe InDesign Publishing and updating Calendar events on SFCM.edu with program information
  • Printing, folding & stapling physical programs for all concerts at SFCM Maintaining the Concert Operations Tracker with Program statuses.

Qualifications:

Description:

The Production team manages recitals, concerts, masterclass and events in all halls. Production staff are often the main and only point of contact for performers on the day/night of an event.

All production staff are required to complete general training which will empower them to run Front of House, Back of House, Classroom Set-ups and Large Ensemble Setups. New production staff members will begin in support roles (Usher, Crew) and may progress to leadership roles as they demonstrate proficiency and initiative (Stage Manager, House Manager).

Production students are also eligible to work Will Call if interested; additional box office training required.

General Production Roles:

Crew

  • Crew members report to the Stage Manager and Production Leads and assist with all backstage logistics (as listed under the Stage Manager description).

Set-Up Crew

  • Set-up Crew assists with setups of all shared spaces as needed including classrooms and common areas.
  • Consistent availability for Large Ensemble rehearsal setups preferred.
  • Can sign up for recurring weekly shifts if desired

Will Call

Will call staff run the box office during ticketed concert shifts. Responsibilities include:

  • Prints and distributes tickets to guests that ordered online or did not reserve ahead of time.
  • Guest reservations for current or upcoming events in Spektrix, SFCM’s online ticketing system.
  • Monitors Vimeo livestreams and updates captions & subtitles.

Ushers

Ushers scan tickets, monitor food and drink in all halls, and make sure guests have a good experience. Additional duties include:

  • Provides information and assistance to patrons, including helping handicap patrons.
  • Knowledge of seat locations and seating assignments.
  • Reports to House Manager and Production Leads during performances
  • Knowledge of SFCM policy concerning concert attendance and enforcement of rules.
  • Adheres to the required dress code (all black attire)
Leadership Roles:

Stage manager (SM)

SMs handle all logistical concert needs including but not limited to:

  • Be confident to “run-the-show” and be the backstage authority figure
  • Set and Strike all performance equipment (including moving pianos, harpsichord, etc)
  • Execute stage changes
  • Operate Lighting Presets
  • Operate Shades, Screen or Acoustic Draperies
  • Communicates with other event staff and performers in order to keep the event running smoothly
  • Monitor events at all times during shift
  • Responsible for organizing and keeping backstage areas clean
  • Notify Security to turn on/off the freight elevator and assist in case of an emergency

House Manager (HM)

HMs are often the first point of contact for SFCM patrons, donors, and the general public, including wayfinding and alerting security or the supervisor on site if escalation is needed. HMs may also be called upon to assist a SM as needed for an event.

  • Oversee house and lobby and controls crowd before and after concerts and events
  • Communicate with Stage Management and Recording Services personnel regarding starting concerts, intermissions, live broadcasts, etc.
  • Communicate with Box Office personnel regarding reserved seating and groups in attendance.
  • Watch hall doors during concerts to ensure performances aren’t disturbed by opening doors, noise from concert goers and noise from outside halls
  • Must keep halls tidy before, during and after events

Other duties as assigned.

  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds and be comfortable with physical labor

Description:

Program Writing Staff will draft and edit program notes for select SFCM in-house performances. All program staff must be accepted to take PDV 500 in order to get Program Notes Writing Training. PDV 500 is taught by Erick Arenas.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent writing skills and the desire to improve in research and writing techniques.
  • Great attention to detail.
  • Willingness to collaborate on research and writing tasks, accept and offer productive critical feedback.
  • All applicants should submit 1-2 writing samples of previous program notes, music history papers, etc. for review with their resume.
  • Must enroll in the Program Notes class (contingent on acceptance) and paid writing time will be separate and limited by project.

Bridge to Arts & Music

Description:

Bridge to Arts & Music (BAM) provides tuition-free instrumental instruction, musical instruments, academic support, and community for underserved students between the ages 6 to 12. Collegiate Teaching Artists provide musical instruction, mentorship, and administrative support for students at BAM sites throughout San Francisco

Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching beginning group classes for strings, winds, and/or brass
  • Bilingual candidates (English/Spanish) are encouraged to apply
  • Background in music with an interest in music education and arts administration

Campus Operations

Description:

The Operations Coordinator will assist with surveying the state/cleanliness of rooms throughout the Bowes Center (including vacant student living units, shared spaces, guest units, etc.), sorting and distributing Replacement Housing mail, and assisting the Director of Operations with other assorted requests as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Candidate must be proficient with the Google software suite

Responsibilities:

  • Sort and distribute Replacement Housing Mail

  • Check status of practice and ensemble rooms, especially doors and entryways
  • Track usage and stock-levels of Bowes L2 workroom and pantry
  • Assist in check-list items for room turnovers of L12 guest suites

Library

(8 hrs/week)

Description:

The student workers work 5-10 hours per week during the library’s operating hours, which are Mondays-Thursdays, 9am-7pm; Fridays-Saturdays, 9am-5pm. Library desk workers assist the Library Director and the library supervisors at the circulation service desk. Student desk workers are expected to perform any circulation and technical processing related functions. 

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with public
  • Knowledge of the Library of Congress call number system and library practices

  • Flexible schedule & willingness to cover co-workers’ shifts during any of the library’s operating hours

Description:

Join the front lines of SFCM’s public-facing communications efforts and help raise the profile and visibility of the school. The PR Assistant learns the top news outlets locally and nationally, drives awareness for SFCM events and activities, and helps to share the results of our publicity efforts with faculty and staff. If you are organized, detail oriented, and interested to learn about all the ways SFCM students, alums, and faculty make headlines, we can’t wait to meet you. The PR Assistant reports to the VP of Strategic Communications and works closely with the Web Producer as well as the Website Assistant Editor and Email Assistant.  

Qualifications:

  • Proficient in Google Docs and Sheets
  • Detail oriented — eagle eye proofreader, spelling and grammar guru a plus
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

The Social Media Assistant will support the Assoc. Director of Digital Content and Social on a variety of projects, mainly focused on social media post scheduling, content creation, research, assisting with the creation of TikTok and Reels videos, and managing Takeover Tuesday.

Take part in the growth of SFCM’s website and help raise the profile, brand, and visibility of the school. The Web Assistant makes modifications to the content and layout of SFCM’s website. If you are organized, detail oriented, and interested in taking part in the continued transformation of our website to be an up-to-date source of all SFCM information as well as an enjoyable user experience for all that get a chance to stop by our domain, we’d love to meet you! The Website Assistant Editor reports to the Director of Marketing and Digital and works closely with the Email Assistant and the Senior Graphic Designer.

Recording Services

Description:

The Recording studio is looking for talented Student Recording Engineers to join our A/V team. As a Student Recording Engineer, you’ll be responsible for the execution of a variety of audio and video projects for SFCM faculty, staff, students, and external rental clients. You’ll have the opportunity to learn and work on state-of-the-art recording systems in a fun yet productive work environment.

The ideal candidate for this role will have previous experience working in audio and/or video productions and can demonstrate skills in A/V hardware and post-production software.

Description:

The Office of Admissions is looking for enthusiastic, dependable, and motivated students to join the current team in welcoming visitors and recruiting the next SFCM class. All who apply for this position will also be considered for audition weekend proctoring and support. Resumé and cover letter are required for this application.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will enjoy sharing their personal stories with prospective students and have an eagerness to learn more about the admission process. This position requires excellent communication skills for interacting with both large groups and in one-on-one settings. It is essential to be comfortable speaking on the phone and on video. Zoom session hosting and database experience is a plus.

Responsibilities:

  • Give regular virtual and in-person campus tours of 50 Oak St and the Bowes Center (training provided)

Professional Development and Engagement Center

Description:

The Professional Development and Engagement Center (PDEC) empowers SFCM musicians to achieve their unique career goals and to become fully engaged as citizens of the world. The PDEC is the hub for student employment, professional development, and community engagement. Peer Career Advisers (PCAs) are ambassadors and information centers for the PDEC. In this role, you will be responsible for promoting employment opportunities and PDEC events, advising students on career paths and materials, assisting in the coordination of PDEC workshops and programs, and acting as administrative support for the PDEC. Students with strong resume and cover letter writing abilities thrive in the advising capacity. Students with experience in social media and/or marketing excel in the promotional duties. If you are interested in either aspect, this may be the position for you! Resume and cover letter are required for this application.

Description:

The Conservatory's Hire SFCM Musicians program provides talented students to play or sing at weddings, parties, and corporate functions at very affordable fees. The assistant's role is to provide exceptional customer service, manage library materials, and facilitate communication with one of the largest revenue generating programs at SFCM.

In addition to Hire SFCM you will perform similar duties with Teach SFCM, a program connecting collegiate students with those interested in private lessons. This is a new program so we are looking for a flexible and dynamic candidate.

  • Provide operational support for Saturday activities, including but not limited to the setup and strike of venues
  • Greet and assist guests in the Pre-College Office Draft and edit concert and recital programs weekly

  • Perform duties such as filing, scanning, and photocopying of jury forms, grade reports, and final examinations
  • Ensure student workstation is tidy and office is stocked with all necessary supplies

Responsible for providing musical and nonmusical support for the SFCM Youth Choruses, which consists of advanced-level musicians ages 7-18.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled SFCM Voice Major
  • Experience teaching in large or small youth ensemble settings
  • Availability on Saturdays (12 - 3:15pm)
  • Ability to maintain strong working relationships with SFCM staff and faculty

The String Bass Teaching Artist is responsible for assisting with weekly operations for the SFCM Pre-College String Orchestra as well as rehearsing and performing with this ensemble. Additional performing duties with Pre-College Contemporary Music Ensemble (CME) as assigned.

The Pre-College TAC Teaching Artist is responsible for providing support in TAC elective classes, assisting students ages 13 - 18 at their individual work stations while the primary teacher is instructing.

Responsible for rehearsing and performing the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre-College Youth Baroque Ensemble, as well as provide mentorship and instruction for Pre-College ensemble students.

  • Experience teaching in large or small youth ensemble settings; Currently enrolled SFCM Historical Performance Major Preferred but not required
  • Availability on Saturdays
  • Ability to maintain strong working relationships with SFCM staff and faculty

Description:

Serve as répétiteur for the Vocal Performance Workshop following the Pre-College Academic Calendar September - May (Saturdays. 3:30 - 6) (5 weeks per semester)

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrate excellent musicianship and artistry as a répétiteur
  • Prior professional experience working with vocalists; four year undergraduate degree or equivalent preferred
  • A strong background and understanding of art song, opera, and musical theater literature
  • Ability to sight-read
  • Possesses Open Score Reading skills
  • Ability to prepare repertoire quickly and work independently
  • Vocal coaching experience and knowledge of diction rules a plus
  • Ability to maintain strong working relationships with SFCM administrative staff and faculty

Selected Candidates will be invited for an interview/audition in which they will perform two previously prepared works and can expect sight-reading.

Description:

As a project based position shortly before the beginning of each semester, the RJAM Transcription Assistants create high quality and professional lead sheets and sheet music under the supervision and with the support of Executive Director and Ensemble faculty members. This detail oriented and precise work requires a quick turnaround with high accuracy and offers the opportunity to refine and apply music transcription and ear training skills.

Qualifications:

  • RJAM Collegiate Student status
  • Great proficiency and experience using notation software such as Sibelius, Finale, MuseScore or similar
  • Thorough understanding of music theory
  • Detail oriented
  • Professional communication skills, written and spoken
  • Strong organizational, time-management and problem solving skills
  • Flexible hours (some weekend availability may be required depending on RJAM performance schedule)

Responsibilities:

  • Research existing lead sheets online and in literature (Real Book etc. provided by RJAM/SFCM)
  • Transcribe music by ear
