PROGRAM OPERATIONS DIRECTOR/GENERAL MANAGER 

Description:

The Program Operations Director or General Manager is a key operational partner reporting to the Executive Director and responsible for the operations of the California Symphony Orchestra as it pertains to planning, developing, and executing the symphony season, and for activities related to education and community programs, ensuring these functions run smoothly, effectively and within budget. This position works closely with the Artistic and Music Director, and supervises the Education and Orchestra Manager, Music Librarian, and stage crew, while maintaining relationships with key collaborative partners and vendors. recording engineer. This role will work closely with the Executive Director, the Music Director, Board of Directors, and other members of the leadership team on the management and strategic direction of the organization. The final job title is dependent on level of experience.

Requirements: 
  • Knowledge and passion for classical music and symphonic repertoire.
  • Demonstrated music literacy and ability to read music scores. 
  • Exceptional problem-solving and analytical skills, with an ability to clearly define issues and make tough decisions in the face of tight timelines and financial resources, ambiguity and competing priorities. 
  • Excellent quantitative skills and a proven ability to utilize analytical tools to make sound operational decisions. 
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with a demonstrated ability to work independently, lead multiple projects, prioritize and manage a high-volume of activities.
  • Ability to develop strong internal and external working relationships to ensure effective delivery of the mission of the Symphony.
  • Proven ability to manage a staff of professionals with strong leadership, motivation and professional development skills.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Motivation and ability to keep current on trends and new research in music education.
  •  Experience in budgeting and variance reporting for programs and operations.
  • Proven ability managing the operations of a non-profit organization.
  • Demonstrated success in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with businesses, volunteers, donors, other non-profit organizations, and government entities.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including the ability to manage and mentor staff.
Core Duties include:
  • Production of concerts, rehearsals, orchestra auditions, and community outreach events
  • Planning the orchestra operations with direction from the Artistic and Music Director, including
    • Creation and oversight of concert production expense budget, especially payroll as it relates to musicians, guest artists, and stage crew payroll and the Young American Composer-in-Residence program
    • Scheduling activities o Researching and securing venues for concerts and rehearsals,
    • Managing contract negotiations for venues
  • Responsible for maintaining collaborative relationships with labor partners, including musicians, stage crew, and any other contracted service personnel, and ensuring all contractual agreements have been met
  • Booking guest artists–securing desired artists (as specified by the Music Director) for necessary dates, negotiating performance fees within budget, arranging for travel, transportation, and payment
  • Managing technical and production needs for the orchestra, including overseeing Technical Director for orchestra setup for all rehearsals and concerts, working with sound engineer(s) for recording needs, and artist hospitality
  • Oversight of CSO educational programs, including o Creation and oversight of community outreach expense budget, especially as it relates to the Sound Minds and Young American Composer in Residence programs
    • Responsible for executing current programs, tracking metrics for each program’s success, contracting teaching artists and performing ensembles, for setting vision for quality and growth of programs, and for developing new programs as appropriate per organization’s evolution
  • Overseeing all aspects of composer relationships: logistical details for community visit(s), recording sessions, coordinating composer deliverables and keeping deliverables on schedule, and managing composer-in-residence selection process
  • Facilitating organization storage needs, maintaining storage unit(s), and keeping inventory of items in storage
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with Contra Costa County school districts, local governments and other civic institutions, and local businesses and organizations
  • Support Executive Director as necessary in procuring funding for California Symphony programs
  • Supervise Education and Orchestra Manager, Music Librarian, Technical Director, and contract recording engineer
  • Work with Bookkeeper on musician and stage payroll, including unemployment claims
Compensation:
  • This position is full-time, exempt
  • Salary ranges from $85,000 to $110,000

Music Director

Description:

Our welcoming, playful, liberal religious community is seeking an experienced Music Director to lead our choir and grow our music program--a foundational element in our services and congregational life. The position is half-time exempt, with supervisory responsibility for our accompanist and media tech personnel.

UUSM's Music Director supports and promotes a congregational worship life that communicates the values of Unitarian Universalism through the practice of religious and cultural diversity and with respect for the dignity and worth of all people. Our Music Director embodies and promotes an appreciation for and understanding of religious pluralism that is spiritually lively, relevant, and transformational. They are able to work with all forms and styles of worship and music, including but not limited to: choral, sacred, classical, gospel, folk, global, contemporary (pop), jazz, and instrumental. Our Music Director possesses sufficient knowledge in musical pedagogy, current technology, and worship arts to create experiences that move and inspire people to bring, be and do their best. Our Music Director collaborates with the minister and worship leaders in worship service planning. They possesses effective leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills, ensuring that musicians, singers, and choirs are properly engaged and prepared. Our Music Director also develops and supports other leaders to assist in accomplishing ministry tasks through the music program.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Ability to inspire passion, fun, and community through musical leadership
  • Proficiency in music, equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree or other advanced training
  • Knowledge of and experience in choral repertoire, conducting, virtual music video production, and keyboard
  • Composing and arranging abilities (desirable)
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong administrative, planning, and organizing skills
  • Proven team leadership and relational skills
Responsibilities:
  • Have a heart-filled desire to collaborate in creating a variety of musical expressions to deepen spiritual experiences
  • Possess, or be willing to cultivate, familiarity with Unitarian Universalist purposes and principles
  • Articulate a vision for the music program at UUSM through establishing goals and objectives for choirs, guest musicians, and other musical activities
  • Participate in the annual conference of the Association of Unitarian Universalist Music Ministries (AUUMM)
  • Collaborate with the Minister to build worship services and other programs
  • Use inclusive language that reflects Unitarian Universalist values
  • Develop volunteer participation and leadership in worship and the music program
  • Manage the music budget and library
  • Supervise the accompanist and media tech personnel
  • Recruit the services of guest musicians as needed
  • Be on-site for Sunday and special services, and lead one weekday evening rehearsal 
Compensation:

ranges from $30,000 to $36,000 per year (plus benefits), based on experience and competitive with similar positions. We comply with compensation guidelines from the Unitarian Universalist Association and the AUUMM.  The position open until filled.
