POSITION SUMMARY

Rubato is a startup that is building AI-based technology for matching music to the listener's desired mood and physiological state. It's personalized biohacking with music. We are particularly focused on how different attributes of a piece of music (e.g., tempo, time signature, mode, danceability, etc.) are correlated with the listener's heart rate variability (HRV), which is a key measure of calmness and balance in the nervous system. Our AI can identify which specific musical attribute is the most effective driver of a listener's HRV. This research can be used for composing music that more effectively calms the audience.

PROJECTS/DUTIES
  • Our interns will regularly use the Rubato app and a smart watch (will be provided) that tracks their heart data to study how different musical attributes impact cardio activity. They will also test their own compositions and/or curated playlists. They will provide feedback to Rubato's Director of Research on listening patterns/preference observed in themselves and others. The final deliverable of the semester will be tailored for each student, based upon their unique interests.
