Information for New Students

Congratulations on your acceptance to the San Francsico Conservatory of Music!  We look forward to welcoming you in August. Before Orientation begins, there are some important steps that you will need to take. Please refer to the checklist below and complete the corresponding forms.

Enrollment Confirmation Checklist - Fall 2013

All new students - submit the following to the Admissions Office:

  • Enrollment Card : Due April 15 for graduate applicants and May 1 for undergraduate applicants.
  • Deposit Card : We require a deposit of $500 along with your enrollment card to confirm your acceptance of admission. Please include this card and payment with your enrollment card.
  • New Student Billing Address Form : Please fill out this form to the best of your ability. Students will often provide a permanent address to use until they have found housing in the Bay Area. You will have an opportunity to update your billing address during registration. 
  • Final Transcripts:  If you are completing either a Bachelor's or Master's Degree this spring, you are required to request an official transcript that verifies your date of graduation.  This is mandatory in order for you to enroll in classes this fall.  If you have already completed your degree, please email us at admit@sfcm.edu to confirm that we have a transcript on file with your date of graduation stated.

All new students - submit the following required forms to the Office of Student Life:

  • Complete a Pre-Enrollment Health Packet . As described in the detailed instructions within the Health Packet, you should return it separately to the Office of Student Life by July 26, 2013.
  • Health Insurance Enrollment or Waiver: All full-time students are required to have U.S.-issued health insurance. The Conservatory offers a policy for all full-time students.  Please visit the Conservatory Student Health Insurance Plan website for the full health insurance policy information.  New students will receive an email over the summer by July 1, 2013 with information on how to complete an online enrollment or waiver before July 26, 2013.

International students:

  • English Proficiency for Non-Native Speakers:  Applicants who were admitted on TOEFL Probation must submit either a passing score of 61 or documentation that you have completed a Level 109 course through ELS before July 1st.  We can not issue an I-20 until you have met this requirement.
  • You may be required to complete our ESL Summer Program.
  • Review Student Visas and I-20s in order to begin the process to obtain appropriate documentation to enter the country for academic study.

For students who want to live in Golden Gate Hall, submit the Golden Gate Hall Housing Application to the Office of Student Life. Please review the Housing Website and Golden Gate Hall Website for additional housing information.

  • For new undergraduate students, the priority deadline is May 15 (fax, email, or postmarked by May 15)
  • For new graduate-level students, the priority deadline is April 29 (fax, email, or postmarked by April 29)

 

Orientation Week Schedule and Events

Orientation Week is required for all incoming undergraduate and graduate students. The Orientation schedule contains programs designed to transition students to the Conservatory community. Additionally, Orientation Week contains a number of required placement examinations and auditions. New students will receive advance information by email; please review the information carefully.

  • Monday, August 5 to Friday, August 16 - ESL Summer Program
  • Saturday, August 17 to Monday, August 19 - Move-in Dates for those residing in Golden Gate Hall
  • Monday, August 19 - New Student Orientation begins for International Students
  • Tuesday, August 20 - New Student Orientation begins for all students
  • Wednesday, August 21 to Friday, August 30 - Auditions, Placement Examinations, Advising, and Registration
  • Tuesday, September 3 - Fall Classes Begin

Additional Information

Ensemble Auditions

Most students will need to audition for ensembles. Ensemble auditions will take place during the orientation period. Instrumentalists will have one audition time for all ensembles. Voice majors will audition separately for various programs. For more information, please visit the ensembles page. You will find audition repertoire and a description of all ensembles.

On occasion, there will openings in ensembles for the spring semester. Students should contact the ensemble director for more information.

Placement Exams

To assess new students levels in certain areas, new students will be required to take an assortment of placement exams depending on the instrument.Optional exams are also offered for advanced placement. For information specific to your degree and major please visit the programs and degrees page, select your major and follow the link under "placement exams".

School Email Address and the SFCM Portal

Over the summer you will receive an email from Brann Mitchell, the SFCM Network Administrator, with important information about your school email address. The official method of communication for the Conservatory is through your SFCM email account. Once you have that information, you will be able to access the SFCM Portal at http://my.sfcm.edu.  If you are having any issues with your account, please contact Brann Mitchell at brann@sfcm.edu.
