Rose Theresa

music history and literature

Musicologist Rose Theresa is a specialist in the history of music and visual culture. She completed her Ph.D. at University of Pennsylvania in 2000 with a dissertation on Gounod's Faust and operatic spectatorship and was contributing editor to the collection of essays Between Opera and Cinema, published by Routledge in 2002. More lately she has been exploring the history of sentimental melodrama and blackface minstrelsy. Oxford University Press recently commissioned Professor Theresa to write a new article on melodrama for Grove Music Dictionaries. She will also contribute articles to the new AmeriGrove. Presently, however, she is concentrating her efforts on a book-length study of Shirley Temple: Sentiment, Song and Dance. Professor Theresa has taught courses in both music and cinema studies at Clark University, University of Virginia, the University at Stony Brook and, most recently, at University of Oklahoma where she was visiting professor of musicology, 2006-2007.
