John Spitzer
chair, music history and literature
A Berkeley California native, John Spitzer studied bassoon in San Francisco with Walter Green and played in the Oakland Symphony under Gerhard Samuel. He earned a B.A. in History and Literature from Harvard (1967) and a Ph.D. from Cornell in Musicology (1983). From 1987 to 2004 he was on the faculty at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. He has also taught at the University of Michigan, and the University of California, Berkeley.
Dr. Spitzer's research interests include the history of the orchestra, American song, authorship and authenticity of musical works, and relations between Western and Eastern music. He is the author of many reviews, essays and articles in the daily press, scholarly journals, and also online (Sounds & Stories; and Making Sense of American Popular Song). His book The Birth of the Orchestra (with Neal Zaslaw), was published in 2004 by Oxford University Press.
