Mark Levine

jazz improvisation workshop

Grammy nominee, pianist, composer, author and educator Mark Levine has studied, played, and recorded with many of the twentieth century’s most important jazz artists, including Jaki Byard, Woody Shaw, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Cal Tjader, Tito Puente, Milt Jackson, Art Farmer, Dizzy Gillespie, Chet Baker, and Art Pepper. He appears on Cal Tjader’s Grammy-winning “La Onda Va Bien“ and his own group Latin Tinge was nominated in 2003 for “ISLA.“ Pursuing the Latin side of his craft, Mark attended the Centro Nacional de Escuela de Arte in Havana, Cuba in 1997. As an educator, Mark authored The Jazz Piano Book, subsequently translated into French, German, and Spanish. In 1996, he completed The Jazz Theory Book, which Jazz Times made the number one choice in its “recommended basic jazz library.“ Besides the Conservatory, his faculty affiliations include the Monterey Jazz Festival, UC Berkeley, Jamey Aebersold Jazz Camps, Stanford Jazz Workshop, The Jazzschool (Berkeley), and Mills College.
