Matthew Kennedy

Film History

Matthew Kennedy is the author of three biographies of classic Hollywood: Marie Dressler (1999), Edmund Goulding’s Dark Victory (2004), and Joan Blondell: A Life between Takes (2007). In addition, his reviews and articles have appeared in Performing Arts, San Francisco Chronicle, Gay & Lesbian Review Worldwide, and the popular online film journal Bright Lights. He has been a guest speaker on film history at the Museum of Modern Art, Pacific Film Archive, Mechanics Institute Library, and on radio, podcasts, film and television. He has taught in Spain and England through the American Institute for Foreign Studies and is presently on the full-time faculty at City College of San Francisco. He holds a B.A. in theater arts from University of California at Los Angeles and an M.A. in anthropology from University of California at Davis, where he was awarded a Fulbright fellowship.
