Percussion

The San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s percussion program consists of Professor Jack Van Geem, principal percussionist and assistant timpanist with the San Francisco Symphony, Professor David Herbert, the Symphony’s principal timpanist, and between seven and eight students.

Jack and Dave are always pleased to talk with prospective students and would be happy to answer any specific questions you have about the program. Visiting prospective students can also arrange a consultative lesson with our faculty by contacting Admissions at 415.503.6231 or admit@sfcm.edu .

The Conservatory offers a four-year undergraduate major in classical percussion, a two-year graduate major in either classical percussion or timpani (NEW! Fall 2006), and a professional studies diploma in classical percussion.

Specific degree information for classical percussion majors at all levels may be found in our collegiate catalog, found here.

Graduate timpanists who enroll at the Conservatory should expect to take a leadership role as a timpanist in Conservatory Ensembles while taking lessons with Dave Herbert and occasional lessons with Jack Van Geem. Opportunities to attend San Francisco Symphony rehearsals may also be possible.
