Gregory Barber

Bassoon; Coordinator, Woodwind Chamber Music; Orchestral Training

Gregory Barber is a regular performer with the San Francisco Symphony, playing in every chair in the section. He was as an acting member from 2005-2008, performing as associate principal in several concerts in San Francisco and Europe. Principal bassoon with the California Symphony, the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival, and a member of the San Diego Mainly Mozart Festival Orchestra, he has performed as guest principal with the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, San Francisco Opera, New Century Chamber Orchestra, on contrabassoon with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and has recorded numerous film scores with the Skywalker (LucasFilm) Symphony. Formerly principal bassoon and guest conductor with the Oakland Symphony and Cabrillo Music Festival, he gave the American premiere of the Sofia Gubaidulina Bassoon Concerto, and was music director of I Solisti di Oakland, a critically acclaimed chamber orchestra which won an ASCAP award for imaginative programming. He conducted the Arch Ensemble for Contemporary Music in San Francisco, on tour in New York and Europe, and on their recording of music by Robert Erickson, listed on the New York Times 1984 “Best Recordings of the Year.” He was educated at Brandeis University and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, studying conducting with Jean-Louis Le Roux and Dr. Jon Robertson, and bassoon with Raymond Ojeda, Matthew Ruggiero, Norman Herzberg, and Leonard Sharrow.
