Gregory Barber

bassoon; coordinator, woodwind chamber music; orchestral training

Gregory Barber is acting second bassoon with the San Francisco Symphony, performing as associate principal bassoon on tour in New York, Lucerne, Vienna and Prague. Principal bassoon with the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival and a member of the Mainly Mozart Festival of San Diego, he has performed with the San Francisco Opera Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, and on numerous film scores with the Skywalker (LucasFilm) Symphony. While principal bassoon and guest conductor with the Oakland Symphony and Cabrillo Music Festival, he gave the American premiere of the Sofia Gubaidulina Bassoon Concerto, won an ASCAP award for programming, and was music director of the acclaimed I Solisti di Oakland series. He has conducted groups throughout the West, including the Arch Ensemble for Contemporary Music in San Francisco, New York, Europe, and on their recording of Robert Erickson compositions, landing on the 1984 New York Times Best Recordings of the Year. He studied conducting with Dr. Jon Robertson and bassoon with Raymond Ojeda, Matthew Ruggiero, Norman Herzberg, and Leonard Sharrow.
