Sylvia Anderson

Sylvia Anderson has spanned two international careers as a mezzo-soprano and dramatic soprano. Trained at Eastman School of Music and with Kammersaengerin, Erna Westenberger in Germany and Maestro Luigi Toffolo in Italy, Miss Anderson has sung with leading houses in Europe, the U.S. and South America. Among her most successful roles was the Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier with the Teatro Colon, Buenos Aires and San Francisco Opera, Carmen at New York City, Frankfurt and Düsseldorf operas, Tosca in Hannover and Saarbruecken, and 15 roles in operas of Richard Wagner, including Brangaene, Kundry, Elsa, Venus and Elisabeth. Known for her Strauss heroines, she sang Salome over 100 times. She has recorded operas of Carl Orff with Herbert von Karajan at the Salzburg Festival and Karl Heinz Stockhausen's Drei Lieder. In recent years Ms. Anderson has dedicated herself to the training of young singers. She has been on the Conservatory faculty since 1990 and founded the Bay Area Summer Opera Theater Institute (BASOTI) in 1992.
