Dear Alumni:
Watching the 2009 graduating students march across the stage in their
robes was a thrill that led me to reflect on the Conservatory’s
remarkable progress since moving to Civic Center. It also reminded me
of the progress that the Alumni Networking Committee has made in nine
short months. We helped achieve the following on your behalf:
- Provided user friendly alumni access to our new home
at Oak Street
- Conducted a survey of alumni to learn what you need
and wish from this institution
- Hosted the first annual reception for graduating
seniors
- Partnered with Google to provide alumni free hosted
email accounts
- Provided access to the Working Advantage program
|
I thank each of you who responded to our
recent survey. Most
importantly, based on your feedback, we are planning some special
initiatives for alumni during the coming year. These initiatives will
include:
- Alumni Concert and reception on August 26th
- Composition, piano, and strings
repertoire classes for alumni
- A new website that will include a secure alumni
section
- The opportunity to communicate directly online
with other alumni
- Additional specially targeted benefits for
alumni
You will learn more about these special opportunities in early fall. In
the meanwhile, I thank you for your support during the past year and
wish you a wonderful summer.
Thank you,
Gary Rust, M.D.
(B.M. piano, ’83)

Pianist Yuliya
Gorenman (M.M. piano, ’92) [far left, above] had the honor of
performing for Senator Ted Kennedy during a private, invitation-only
77th birthday celebration at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.
Yuliya accompanied beloved mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade and five
young girls from Oakland’s Saint Martin de Porres Catholic School at
the star-studded “Some Enchanted Evening” musical salute in Mr.
Kennedy’s honor. Other performers included Bill Cosby, Denyce Graves,
Lauren Bacall and James Taylor. View photos and video clips, as well as
a schedule of Yuliya’s upcoming concerts at www.yuliya.com.
Pianist Myung-Ji Lee (M.M.
piano, ’08) was named a First Prize Winner of the American Protégé 2009
International Piano and Strings Competition. The competition aims to
encourage young musicians to increase their level of expertise, polish
their performance skills, explore new pieces and composers, and to
promote their talents. The award earned her the opportunity to perform
in the winners concert at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall,
where she performed Franz Liszt’s La
Leggierezza.
Soprano Lise Lindstrom
(M.M. voice, ’96)
will make her Metropolitan Opera debut as the title role in Turandot
in November 2009. This role has been central to Lise’s repertoire with
previous critically acclaimed performances at Opera Hong Kong, Palm
Beach Opera, Orlando Opera and elsewhere. Opera News applauded her
recent performance, "every laser-like high note a brilliant, rock-solid
monument to her voice and technique. The warmth came through, too, in
the caressing of phrase after phrase, both in the aria and in the final
duet. Her carefully conceived transformation from ice princess to woman
in love was riveting.” www.liselindstrom.com
