Tarn Travers (B.M.
violin, ’05) was one of the six winners of this year’s New World
Symphony concerto competition. He will perform the Cortés violin
concerto with the NWS on Friday, March 14 at the Lincoln Theatre in

Switchboard Music Festival, created and produced by Ryan Brown (M.M. composition, ’05), Jeff Anderle (M.M. clarinet, ’06)
and Jonathan Russell (M.M.
composition, ’03), takes place on Sunday, March 30th, 2-10pm at Dance
Mission Theater, 3316 24th Street in San Francisco. Switchboard is an
eight-hour music festival that brings together composers and musicians

The Riverside (CA) Arts Council
recently recognized Alma Batista
(M.M. piano, ’92) as Arts Honoree of the Month for her key role in
planning, producing and performing in an outreach concert designed to
expose Eastside youth to classical music. After leaving the
Conservatory, Alma went on to earn her D.M.A. from UCSB in 2002. Her
dissertation, The Life of Puerto
Rican Composer Narciso Figueroa, and his Contributions to the Puerto
Rican Danza, is considered to be the first comprehensive study
on the danzas of Puerto Rican pianist and composer Figueroa. www.dralmabatista.com
Matthew Cannon
(M.M. percussion, ’02) released a pod
cast on the topic of musical dynamics for the Music Genome Project,
where he also works as a Classical Music Analyst. Matthew has also kept
a busy performance schedule, with percussion engagements with Ensemble
Parallèle, the cabaret ensemble Cotton Candy, Beatropolis and various
chamber groups. He is recorded on Albany Records, Helicon Records and

The Del Sol Quartet, composed of alumni Charlton Lee (M.M. viola, ’93), Kate Stenberg (B.M. violin, ’84), Rick Shinozaki (viola, ’92-’93) and Hannah Addario-Berry (M.M. chamber
music, ’06), has won the CMA/ASCAP First Prize Award for Adventurous
Programming of Contemporary Music for the second year running. The
award recognizes ensembles and presenters with exemplary commitment to
20th and 21st century music. Del Sol is lauded for their consistent
effort to expand the role of the traditional string quartet and for
their commitment to collaborations, including a 2007 engagement with

Heather Meyer (M.M. voice, ’96)
recently performed her New York solo opera debut, singing Ellen Orford
in Britton’s Peter Grimes
with One World Symphony. Her choral engagements with the New York
Philharmonic, American Symphony Orchestra and Voices of Ascension have
also kept her busy. She recently sang in the debut performance of the
group Choral Chameleon, founded and directed by Vince Peterson (B.M. composition,
’03), which presented music of Conservatory faculty Conrad Susa and David Conte.
Sharmay Musacchio (M.M.
voice, ’99) gave her debut performance with the Los Angeles Opera early
last year. The production, Kurt Weill’s Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny,
was recently broadcast nationwide on PBS television’s Great Performances. She was honored
to share the stage with Audra McDonald and Patti LuPone. Click here to watch a video clip of

Peggy Spool (M.M. voice, ’99) celebrates the fifth year of
Vivace Youth Chorus, an organization she founded. Based in San Jose
(CA) Vivace grew from the void that was left when a previous youth
choir closed, and has since grown into five ensembles plus an
introductory class for young children. Singers learn music theory, ear
training and vocal technique, and perform in semi-annual recitals. The
top-level choirs will travel to Hawaii this summer to perform
Polynesian music and dance at the Pacific Rim Children’s Chorus
